the rain will come. it is thursday, february 10. this is "today in the east bay." good morning, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. it is 4:30. let's check in with christina loren and a little rain. a little rain on the way, but after the long dry spell we have experienced it is well received. 38 degrees in concord. 39 in oakland. now we will have to wait for that rain monday into tuesday, wednesday into thursday of next week looking very wet. but today nice and dry. it will be one of those days to find a cloud in the sky where it will be hard. 62 in oakland. 64 in los gatos. i think it will be hard to find a cloud. lots of sunshine today. good air quality. we'll take about what's coming up in the extended forecast. right now we have a major situation on the roadways.

good morning, christina. the freeway commute shows you that overall there are green speed indicators showing speeds close to the limits throughout the area. the approach to the bay bridge, 680 at stone valley road, all the lanes have clear sod that portion of the east bay is clear. as you cross over the bay bridge into san francisco we have a major incident on a city street. scott mcgrew has more details on that in downtown san francisco. a man who police believe -- rather, let's start with developing news. we'll go right though to that horrible scene in san francisco where witnesses say one man was trapped in a car after an overnight accident. christie smith is live in san francisco with the latest. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. i just got off the phone with san francisco police and they do confirm this is a fatal accident here at deary. i'll step aside so you can see what's happening here. the entire intersection is

completely shut down. the officers i spoke with said witnesses told them said they saw the driver of a black audi on the other side going at a high rate of speed west on geary blowing through stop slights and finally at this intersection plowed into the acura you see up in the median. they tell me that the person inside of that acura died on the scene. an adult male. they also tell me that they took the driver of the audi into custody. because of what witnesses described, they say this is a dui investigation as well as a major accident investigation. at this point i asked how long this investigation might be going on, they tell me it could take several hours, so it certainly could impact the morning commute. if you are coming from the outer richmond, certainly something to consider, but i can tell you that they have the entire intersection plus a block in each direction here onze, here

on geary shut down. we'll bring you the latest as soon as we can. reporting live from san francisco, christie smith, "today in the east bay." a man who kidnapped and assaulted a woman in oakland is off the streets this morning. 40-year-old larry wilson was arrested on kidnapping and gun charges in connection with saturday night's attack that happened here. an officer spotted wilson and chased him through the city. he was captured ten minutes later on 95th and sunnyside. officers were originally looking for two men they think were linked to the crime. it is unclear if they are still searching for a second. is. north oakland's controversial injunction will take part today. neighbors and lawyers will hold a meeting on the injunction. it covers 100 blocks in oakland. police count the success of the injunction which among other

things forbids gang members from gathering in certain spots. but some neighbors are critical disputing its ability to stop gang violence. it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars for the city. the meeting is today in oakland at the courthouse at 1:30. the county has cut more than a quarter billion dollars from its budget since 2008 and needs to find another $50 million to cut next year. the contra costa board of supervisors chair will give the speech at the hotel in concord at 11:30. a former president's yacht is in danger of closing to the public. the u.s.s. potomac lost half his operating cash after the port stopped funding the yacht. the ship was use d as president

franklin roosevelt's yacht until he died. more than a quarter million people have visited it since it opened as a historic landmark in 1995. another landmark could be opening. the california hotel will be up for a meeting tonight to see if it will be kept as a national landmark or not. the meeting will be tonight at the motel at 6:30. cheryl hurd tells us about a mistake that could be worth nearly $100,000. >> reporter: this book is worth lots and lots of money. the story is pretty amazing. it is about a book that contains a word that isn't there. don windle has loved books since

he was 6 years old. 60 years later he's a book collector in san francisco. he now has in his hands the find of a lifetime. >> a man walks in the door one day with a book wrapped up in a piece of cloth that his own mother said it could be worth some money. >> reporter: windle took one look at the book and said -- >> do you know what you've got here? >> reporter: it is one of the rarest bibles printed by london's royal printers robert barker and martin lucas back in 1631. >> this book is called "the wicked bible." >> reporter: wicked because it contains wickedly twisted words of the seventh commandment, one of the most famous misprints in literary history. >> which the law by god giveth, thall shalt commit adultery. the word not is missing. all the copies were withdrawn. people who had the book tore

that page out. >> reporter: the deeply religious flipped. the royal publishers did whatever they could to get all the misprinted bibles back. there are maybe 40 copies known to exist in the world. only two have sold in the last 50 years. >> they are worth in the $30,000 to $50,000 range. >> reporter: just think $50,000 for a word that isn't there. >> of all the words missing from the bible that was the one. you have to wonder -- i don't think it was an accident, but i wouldn't wish to align the memory of whoever did it. >> reporter: this bible will be available at a book fair at the concord exhibition center in san francisco. it starts on friday and ends on sunday. in oakland, cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." a little bit of an inconvenience at the bus shelter will pay off for contra costa bus riders.

delta transit will replace 22 vandalized shelters with new ones. the shelters cost delta $250,000. the old shelters were falling apart. the new shelters in high-traffic areas such as the front of the antioch post office will be made of steel and will be lit at night using solar power unlike shelters that have a bench they'll have divided seats. we have been talking about rain for a while, christina, we are just not sure when it is coming. now you are narrowing it down a bit. >> hey, now. hey, now. >> a forecast is a forecast, as long as it hasn't happened yet you are accurate. you are narrowing the accuracy. i appreciate your face in my abilities, mr. mcgrew. good thing the new bus stops will be made of metal because they have someone in common with scott mcgrew.

we are looking chilly this morning. but we'll see lots of challenge. i challenge you to find a cloud in the sky today. this is a very well defined low pressure system. you can see all the cold air. those are the little pockets of cloud you see. cold air on the way as well as a lot of moisture. heading through the latter part of next week, tuesday, wednesday, thursday and friday we'll see the rainy pattern ramp up. a lot of rain anticipated for tuesday. and we need that moisture, so bring it on. today a lot of sunshine. 62 degrees in oakland. 65 in redwood city. 64 degrees in los gatos. it is a little breezy in the east bay hill this is morning. if you are waking up in fairfield, take it easy out there. you may get knocked around by the wind. the breezes will knock down after the sun rises. we'll go to mike inouye with a serious situation. we are still following the deadly accident in san francisco. we'll bring you updates throughout the morning. not a whole lot of surface traffic throughout the area. we are focusing on the commute.

a new website will make it easier for you to find out how close your home is to an earthquake fault. for the first time the geological survey is providing online access to a set of comprehensive maps showing active faults. realtors have been using the maps for decades in their disclosure agreements. now regular people can access

and this is really going to kickoff the pineapple express moving back to the bay area. every day next week we have a chance for rain. rain is back in the forecast, but today will be sunny, 64 in los gatos. 65 in san jose. the east bay, 63 for you in fairfield. 65 in livermore. the east bay will be seeing one of the warmest days throughout this afternoon. we'll look at your drive with mike inouye. so far the east bay, as you may expect it this hour, a pretty light volume on the freeways. here's the speed indicators. green all over the maze and the wall net creek interchange where the earlier accident approaches 6806789. crossing the cartinas bridge, we have a wind advisory from solano county. not enough for an advisory level, but hold on tight, folks. passing over the bay bridge, a nice drive into the city. no delays out of oakland into san francisco, but i continue to follow the deadly accident on city streets. christie smith is live there as

until now, at&t was under fire for a network that resulted in too many dropped callsle. verizon says it will be better because of $60 billion spent on infrastructure over the last ten years. >> i think our network is ready. we are excited of having the iphone users on there. >> reporter: verizon lags in that its iphones can't perform voice data functions simultaneously and offers fewer overseas services than atat. but they have a big leg up with the personal wi-fi hot spot. >> if you have additional devices that use wi-fi to connect to the internet, the verizon phone is going to give you that ability to be able to do that while you're on the road. >>er. >> reporter: an estimated 1 million new iphone users join its network in the first week alone. chris clackum, nbc news.

pg&e pipelines. find out what caused later on "today in the bay." here's another reason to shove your addiction to diet soda. researchers found higher risks for stroke and heart attack among those who drink it every day versus those who drink no soda whatsoever. there's no explanation why diet soda could be risky but those who drink lots of it don't exercise, weigh more and have other high risk factors like high blood pressure. health experts say to drink water instead. and if you can't sleep, get shut eye because the lack of sleep can increase your risk for stroke and heart attack as well. british researchers analyzed data from 470,000 people in eight countries, including the u.s., and found if you sleep less than six hours per night and have disruptive sleep you stand a 48% chance of developing or dying from heart disease, a 15% greater chance of developing

or dying from a stroke. dairy farmers are crying over spilled milk. the environmental protection agency wants to regulate spilled milk like oil. they want farmers to make an emergency plan to deal with a spill. this includes training first responders and building containment facilities. the dairy community says this is costly to farms and milk suppliers and consumers would feel the effects at the cash register. >> talk about common sense regulatory reform. this is anything but. >> the part that we really have to consider are the unintended consequences. and once you develop all these regulations, how easy is it to misa big thing. >> the epa may have a change of heart and are thinking of excluding milk from the regulations. let's go to christina who has rain in the forecast. >> yes, we are seeing moove over sunshine. make way for showers coming our

way. we have a windchill factor this morning because it is breezy throughout the east bay hills. take it easy. if you drive a high-profile vehicle, that will be the case for the first part of day, the wind will subside heading into the second half of the day. we have a lot to talk about when it comes to our future forecast. high pressure still in control. you can see this arcing here with the cloud cover-up around a ridge of high pressure to keep us nice and sunny. look at what's pushing out of the way. we have a big system here. a classic low pressure system becoming more and more well defined every time i look at it. this could bring us up to an inch of rain heading through the latter part of tuesday. that's when we expect the bulk of the moisture to come through. it will bring the clouds into our area as of tomorrow afternoon. so today hard to find a cloud in the sky. 65 degrees in napa. 65 in san rafael. fairfield this morning is at 63 degrees. that will be your forecasted high, but it is so chilly out

there with temperatures dropping heading through the next hour or so. fairfield this morning, your low is 28 degrees. another cold start on friday, nice conditions. it will be a nice weekend. but then late sunday the clouds start to increase with rain coming down for valentine's day. when it comes to what you are getting your lady friend, maybe an umbrella. maybe a raincoat? i think those are fantastic gift ideas. >> i will try that and let you know how it goes. mexican divers freed a humpback whale that was trapped in a fishing net along the pacific coast. look at the underwater video of the trapped whale being rescued. a team of six divers helped free the whale that measures more than 26 feet long and weighs 33 tons. the navy blocked off the area and divers used ropes and hooks attached to three bowees.
